Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:With minimal supervision, performs various bridge construction inspection tasks, often involving most difficult and complex situations, including assessing adherence to quality control procedures for concrete and structural steel. Inspects various facets of work on the jobsite and performs continuous surveillance of assigned inspection activities to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Documents nonconformance and participates in determining appropriate resolution. Inspection activities are usually concentrated in one or more of the following areas: soils, steel, concrete, asphalt, utilities, architectural, steel, mechanical, or electrical. Frequently serves in the capacity of Lead Inspector. Willingness to travel is expected. Performs work in safe manner and is cognizant of public safety.?SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:Conducts inspections to determine if work has been done in accordance with contract specifications and may include any of the following:

  • Demolition of transportation facilities (roads, streets, bridges etc)
  • Construction of roads, bridges, and other associated improvements (curb and gutter, street, sidewalk, landscaping)
  • Drainage work, traffic control, compliance with SWPPP requirements
  • Installation of temporary and permanent signs and delineation
  • Installation of mechanical equipment
  • Building and facility construction and associated site development
  • Preparing Daily Inspector reports
  • Taking project photographs on a daily basis and filing them
In addition:?
  • Maintains office files related to the project, quantity calculations and writes daily diaries.
  • Prepares daily reports and other documentation, as required by contract. Familiarity with NYSDOT specifications, MURK practices and forms, and NYCDOT work procedures a must.
  • Verifies that only approved materials are incorporated in the work.
  • Performs labor compliance interviews and maintains as-built plans.
  • Recognizes potential conflicts, issues and problems, and reports to supervisor with proposed solution.
  • Collects, reviews and files Certificate of Compliance, MSDS, inspection tags and other information relevant to the materials used.
  • Provides technical guidance and delegates responsibilities as appropriate to lower-level inspectors.
  • Coordinates work of subconsultants for surveying and material testing.
  • Prepares quality control reports and recommends changes to procedures.
  • Reports on installed quantities to verify applications for payment and change order work.
  • Responds to the call backs in case of emergency at the project site.
  • Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
