Our team of over 400 engineers and developers are empowered to develop cutting-edge technology every day.Careem was established in July 2012, became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Uber Technologies, Inc. in January 2020, and today operates in over 100 cities across 12 countries.About the roleAs an Engineering manager for Express, you will utilize strong management and technical competencies to lead, mentor and grow our engineering team. This is a people manager with a blend of technical skills, management and strategy. You will lead multiple engineers with different disciplines: backend, frontend and mobilet. You will have an opportunity to make a tremendous impact on the region and the trajectory of the company.Key responsibilities include

  • Inspire, mentor and lead an agile engineering team to deliver high quality products.
  • Grow engineering team as needed, providing guidance on compensation (budget and allocation) and promotions.
  • Assist your team in developing roadmaps for system and product growth, then identify, plan, and execute projects to support that growth.
  • Work closely with the TPM and product teams and ensure that your squad is working efficiently to meet sprint goals.
  • Represent your team to senior leadership and other groups to build a challenging vision and ensure you have the resources to deliver it.
  • Partnering with the product and business teams and ensuring the engineering team is meeting our business goals.
  • Clearly communicate business goals to our engineers and keep them at the focus of how we build products. Ensure engineering is always adding business value and communicate this value to business leaders.
  • Strong ability to coach developers, helping them improve their skills and grow their careers.
  • Experience solving large-scale engineering challenges.
  • Work closely with multiple external teams and stakeholders in different domains and manage dependencies efficiently.
  • Work closely with the architecture and platform teams ensuring we minimize the duplicate effort between different verticals.
  • Encourage and support others to take on responsibility, authority, and accountability.
Preferred experience & skills
  • 6+ years of software development experience, 1+ or more spent in leadership/management.
  • At least 1 year of experience at a rapidly growing startup, or with leading cutting edge teams at a larger tech company, and ideally you have hands-on experience building systems and technologies.
  • Good experience of managing engineers and building new teams.
  • BS Computer Science or equivalent degree.
  • Solid knowledge of platform architecture, design patterns, and conceptual modelling.
  • Backend software development of large-scale, distributed systems, using micro-services.
  • Mobile and web experience is a plus.
  • Experience at eCommerce is a plus.
  • Strongly familiar with Scrum and agile methodologies.
