Job Description

The Lab Technician assists and supports science teachers in the implementation of the science curriculum and its related instructional activities. He/she provides technical support and ensures a safe environment under which science experiments can be conducted.The Lab Technician works under the direct supervision of the Science Coordinator. He/she assists science teachers through a range of activities including readying lab equipment and materials ahead of science classes and conducting science experiment to support science classes. He/she employs safe practices in the lab by applying the Occupational Health and Safety rules and regulations. He/she also ensures the safe storage and disposal of both hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals and biological deposits, cleaning, sanitizing and safely storing lab equipment and materials, and sanitizing lab premises..Instructional Support1. Collaborates with science teachers on scientific experiments2. Advises science teachers on the technical requirements of the curriculum3. Communicates with science teachers on the preparations required ahead of their class4. Conducts lab experiments in front of science teachers and students5. Collects and preserves live samples to support life science lessons6. Provides guidance to teachers and students on the proper use of labequipment7. Uses science related ICT tools in demonstrations and lab sessions8. Acts as a consultant to science teachers on safety procedures in lab usage9. Supervises students in the lab and ensures that all student adhere to lab instructions10. Ensures the integration of safety and health practices (e.g. wearing safety goggles and lab gowns during science experiments) during lab sessionsPreparation, Maintenance and Care1. Ensures that adequate notice is given by teachers in order to prepare lab materials and equipment (chemical solutions, projector, etc.)2. Maintains an inventory of lab equipment3. Logs orders for lab materials and equipment in consultation with the ScienceCoordinator4. Checks science lab equipment regularly to ensure that they are workingproperly5. Establishes and maintains a safe system for labeling, storing, handling anddisposing of chemical and biological materials according to proper guidelines6. Maintains an updated and easily accessible Material Safety Data Sheet(MSDS)7. Maintains an accurate and updated record of consumables and ensures replenishing regularly8. Maintains an accurate inventory record of equipment and confirms and logs the safe receipt of new ones9. Reports any damage to lab equipment and arranges for damage repairs10. Ensures that all lab equipment are clean and safe to use11. Orders current catalogues and price lists from laboratory supplies companies12. Prepares budget requirements for the acquisition of new supplies and equipment13. Maintains a clean and well organized experiment preparation location14. Conducts regular safety audits and inspections15. Treats chemical spills with extreme caution and cleans them up using properprocedures16. Administers first aid when needed

• Minimum Bachelor?s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (or equivalent such as pharmacy) from an accredited university or a combination of related degree and experience
• 3 years or more of cumulative experience in a similar position
• Teaching experience would be an asset
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive work relationships with members of the staff
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Advanced computer skills supporting this type of work, including and not limited to word processing tools, spreadsheets, and presentation tools
• Highly developed organizational and planning skills, including managing time, competing priorities and resources in a structured way
• Demonstrated ability to set and manage clear and demanding performance expectations for individuals and teams
