Job Description

SummarySorts and transports Lab specimens to appropriate areas in the Hospital. Assists in ICIS related duties for Lab specimens, work as receptionist in Outpatient Collection areas and cleans work area and equipment as required.Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Identifies and sorts for routing all types of Lab specimens by specimen type and Lab computer identification label.
  2. Delivers the correct lab specimen to the correct Lab Section in a timely manner for receipt and processing, as per established procedures and schedules in the Section.
  3. Receives patients? specimens collection reminder sheets and provides Q-matic numbers to patients.
  4. Answers telephone courteously as required.
  5. Creates encounters, activates orders and prints outpatient collection labels and sorts them for phlebotomists to process. Reprints as required for samples accessioned.
  6. Receives Hematology and/or serology samples into the LIS system as required, verifying MRN, patient name, test and sample type are appropriated.
  7. Collects, decontaminates and disposes of all contaminated waste in Microbiology Section as per established microbiology and safety standards.
  8. Operates the autoclave in a safe and appropriate manner as per Lab guidelines.
  9. Loads and performs glassware cleaning procedures: Collecting, cleaning and distribution of all dirty glassware in the Laboratory as per established chemical and safety standards of the Department.
  10. Works in accordance with standards established by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and the College of American Pathologists.
EducationHigh school education is required.Experience RequiredNo related work experience is requiredOther Requirements(Certificates)
