The College is one of 12 Colleges of The University of Alabama, the 38,000-student Tuscaloosa flagship campus of the UA System. The College also conducts medical student education as the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus of the 4-campus University of Alabama School of Medicine, based at UAB in Birmingham. The Colleges mission focuses on improving the health of individuals and communities in Alabama and the region through leadership in medical education and primary care; by provision of quality health care services; and by scholarship.The College consists of a unique Department of FIRM consisting of 19 Family and Internal Medicine physician faculty and a core interdisciplinary faculty of more than 60 others in the fields of OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Psychology, Surgery, Neurology, Social Work, Education, Library Science, Clinical Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition, and Population Health - all dedicated to FM residency education, the general professional education of medical students, and the scholarship of primary care.PROGRAMS: The College is sponsor of the UA Family Medicine Residency and 7 fellowships for Family Physicians. The residency, a 16-16-16 program, is the 2nd or 3rd largest FM residency in the country, now in its 45th year. Of the over 460 residency graduates, 85% practice in the five state area of the SE, half in rural areas, and comprise one of every seven Family Physicians in Alabama. Over almost 900 students have completed their clinical training in Tuscaloosa since 1972, entering Family Medicine and primary care careers at over twice the national average. The Colleges nationally recognized Rural Pipeline Programs and the Institute for Rural Health Research, along with basic science, social science, and health professional resources and collaborators on campus among the UA faculty, and innumerable specialty and medical research faculty among UAB faculty, create a uniquely resource-rich environment for a medical educator. The Colleges clinical enterprise conducts 80,000 ambulatory visits and over 10,000 admissions a year to a broad patient population, including the faculty and staff population of UA.
