Job Description

Position Description: The University ofMissouri invites applications for the position of AssistantProfessor in Monogastric Livestock Nutrition in the Division ofAnimal Sciences (https://animalsciences.missouri.edu/),an academic unit of the College of Agriculture, Food and NaturalResources and Life Sciences. This tenure-track, 9-month positionwill have approximately 60% research and 40% teachingresponsibilities. The selected candidate is expected to develop anationally recognized, extramurally funded, independent researchprogram and engage in collaborative research. Research emphasisshould have both basic and whole-animal components related tomonogastric nutrition, which may include nutritional physiology,metabolism, biochemistry, microbiology, and/or growth biology. Thesuccessful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate andgraduate courses, train graduate students, and actively participatein the graduate program.The University of Missouri is an AAU member, Carnegie R1institution, and one of the most comprehensive land grantuniversities in the nation, including agriculture, veterinarymedicine, and human medicine. Outstanding collaborative opportunities exist withthe following Divisions in the College: Food, Nutrition andExercise Sciences; Biochemistry; and Plant Science and Technology,as well as the College of Veterinary Medicine, the School ofMedicine and other units on campus. Supporting facilities includeextensive swine and poultry farm facilities, an on-campus meatprocessing facility and nearby feed mill and poultry processingfacility. Office and lab space will be in the Animal ScienceResearch Center, which houses research and teaching facilities,including: nutrition, metabolism, physiology, and molecularlaboratory space and equipment; the Brody Environmental Center,with environmental chambers for livestock studies; a laboratoryanimal facility; large animal rooms, and fully-equipped surgicalfacilities for lab animals and livestock.A unique attraction is the opportunity to collaborate with ournationally-recognized researchers using genetically engineeredlivestock as biomedical models and for agricultural applications.For example, MU hosts the NIH-funded National Swine Resource andResearch Center (NSRRC; https://nsrrc.missouri.edu/),which enhances our capacity for growing pigs and biomedicalresearch. MU has committed to additional facilities for swineresearch. Further, the group recently added a faculty member inavian genetic engineering and plans to expand in this area.Importance of Monogastric Livestock Production inMissouri: Missouri ranks 6th in the U.S. for production ofhogs, 6th for turkeys and 9th for broilers.
