Job Description

General Purpose?The Science Laboratory & Art Technician will primarily manage the school Science Lab and liaise with teachers on all curriculum-based activities undertaken in the Science Lab under the direct supervision of the Head of Science. This role reports to the Secondary School Principal and the Head of Science. In addition, the Science Laboratory & Art Technician will exhibit interest in art and creative flair to assist the Art department in the management and preparation of the art rooms for student lessons.?Main Tasks and Responsibilities?As Science Laboratory Technician:?ActivitiesPreparation of resources, assembling apparatus.Obtaining materials during school hours by local purchase.Giving technical advice to teachers, technicians and pupils.Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities.Assisting in practical classes.Giving health and safety advice to technical staff, teachers and students.Disposal of waste materials.Checking fume cupboards, first-aid kits; carryingout electrical and other safety checks.Organising, storing and checking the condition of chemicals and equipment.Constructing and modifying apparatus.Setting up and caring for plant collections.Preparing standard solutions, purifying chemicals, treating waste.Checking stock.Keeping stock records.Maintaining resources.Collecting, checking and returning equipment to stores.General laboratory cleaning of bench surfaces and equipment.General cleaning and repair of equipment.?In addition, the Science Lab Technician is also responsible for the following:?Ensuring and promoting the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment through:? actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring and review of both health and safety procedures and information resources.? keeping up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development.??????? the provision of technical advice and support on health & safety issues to teaching and technical staff, if necessary.? the safe treatment and disposal of used materials including hazardous substances and responding to actual or potential hazards.? the healthy and safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials.? carrying out health & safety and risk assessments relating to laboratory work.Ensuring the availability of suitable materials and equipment, helping to compile orders and liaising or negotiating with suppliers and finance department.? This will include sourcing, costing and suggesting economic alternatives to maintain stock levels.? Keeping up-to-date records of stock.???Ensuring that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repairing of equipment are carried out to the required standard.?Collating, cataloguing and storing worksheets, exam papers and internally produced booklets.As Art Technician:? The management and maintenance of materials, tools and equipment in the art rooms.? Preparation of art materials for lessons; example, mixing paint, preparing modroc, cutting card etc.?? Assistance with displays around the school and the maintenance of these.?? Cleaning up of brushes, palettes etc.? Some photocopying and preparation of learning resources.
