Backend Engineers at Rain ensure that our internally critical and externally visible systems are engineered for reliability, scalability, high availability, maintainability and resilience. Our Backend Engineers are usually Software Craftsmen/women who continuously strive to raise the bar across our Engineering teams.About The RoleAs a Software Engineer at Rain, you will be joining a team of talented Software Engineers with overall accountability for end to end development. You will not only have the technical chops to roll up their sleeves and provide hands-on technical leadership on major projects, but also empower and grow your teammates to do the same. You will advocate and act as a subject matter expert for a specific technology stack and engage actively with senior technology leadership to define the strategic technology roadmap for your area and work with development teams and product owners to plan, prioritize and execute technical strategy based on the roadmap. You should have an incredible capacity for both detail and big picture thinking and be able to apply your technical skills to every layer of our technology stack from frontend through backend to infrastructure. You must also understand where technology can provide value to the business and have a strong passion for the web, mobile and platform technology landscape.Responsibilities* Accountability for the design of the platform to meet security, scalability, performance, reliability and availability requirements * Set the standard for engineering excellence across the organization * Design elegant architectures that guarantee efficiency, maintainability, extensibility, and the ability for systems to evolve over time. * Simplify processes and technologies ensuring the platform is robust in the presence of failures, scalable, and cost-effective. * Promote exemplary coding practices in terms of code organization, clarity, simplicity, error handling, and documentation. * Tackle intrinsically hard problems, acquiring expertise as needed by decomposing complex problems into straightforward solutions.Propose projects that may require the work of severalteams* to implement and divide responsibilities so that each team can work independently and have the system come together into an integrated whole. * Adopt a flexible and adaptable approach to meet the needs of the team, project, or product by soliciting differing views and are willing to change your mind as you learn more. * Demonstrate adeptness at building consensus and become a trusted member of the technical leadership team * Flex your role as large initiative progress; during the early phases, broadly influencing several related teams and then subsequently spending weeks or months focusing on a particularly challenging problem * Split your time between coding, design, and architecture based on where your skills will have the greatest impact (or in response to job requirements). * Amplify your impact by leading design reviews for complex software and/or critical features across the organization * Probe assumptions, illuminate pitfalls, and foster shared understanding of problems and solutions * Educate and keep the engineering community up to date on advanced technical issues, technologies, and trends. * Participate in sharing knowledge and collaborating with other Senior Engineers, specifically attending and/or presenting at internal conferences, community events and making yourself available to the overall developer community. * Guide the career growth of team members by mentoring and participating in performance discussions.Experience, Qualifications and CompetenciesRequired* Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other technical field of study or equivalent practical experience * 5+ years of relevant work experience, ideally over 2+ years of work experience as a lead developer * Experience in several programming languages including but not limited to Golang, Java or Scala * Experience designing and deploying micro services with Golang, Java or Scala packaged with Docker and deployed to Kubernetes or similar platforms * Experience applying Domain Driven Design principles to architect and design high throughput and low latency systems with the ability to handle multiple projects/priorities simultaneously * Recent experience with messaging systems like ActiveMQ, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Kinesis, Solace PubSub+ * Operational experience working with large, highly available, highly transactional systems on private and public clouds * Demonstrable experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure or Google Cloud * Proven experience working with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), configuration management systems and CI/CD. * Experience on both RDBMS and NoSQL database platforms PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, RDS, Couchbase, MongoDB, Cassandra * Managing source code and package repositories such as GitHub, Bitbucket, Nexus, Artifactory * Delivering quality software in a predominantly remote but highly collaborative Agile development environment * Clear understanding of how to analyze and present operational metrics and use that data to optimize the development processDesirable* MSc. degree in Computer Science or similar technical field of study * Recent experience working with geographically distributed teams * Recent experience delivering IaaS, PaaS and SaaS solutions on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform * Demonstrable experience with open source technologies such as Ansible, Chef, Terraform, and Jenkins
