Job Description

Job Title: University Attorney˙Job Summary: The University Attorney is responsible for providing legal advice and guidance to the universitys administration, faculty, staff, and governing bodies. They ensure that the university operates within the bounds of the law and effectively manages legal risks. This role involves handling a wide range of legal matters specific to higher education institutions.˙Responsibilities:1. Legal Advisory Services: Provide legal counsel on a variety of issues, including but not limited to contract law, labor and employment law, intellectual property, academic affairs, compliance, governance, and student affairs.˙2. Contract Review and Negotiation: Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents related to the universitys operations, such as research contracts, vendor agreements, and employment contracts.˙3. Litigation Management: Manage and oversee any litigation matters involving the university, including working with external counsel if necessary and ensuring that the institutions interests are protected.˙4. Compliance and Regulatory Affairs: Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting higher education and advise the university on compliance matters, such as Title IX, FERPA, and accreditation requirements.˙5. Policy Development: Assist in the development and revision of university policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance and alignment with best practices.˙6. Risk Management: Identify and assess legal risks associated with university operations and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.˙7. Intellectual Property: Protect the universitys intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights, and assist with technology transfer and licensing agreements.˙8. Ethics and Conflicts of Interest: Provide guidance on ethical issues and conflicts of interest involving faculty, staff, and administrators.˙9. Labor and Employment: Advise on labor and employment matters, including employee relations, disputes, and compliance with labor laws and regulations.˙10. Student Affairs: Address legal issues related to student affairs, such as student conduct, admissions, and accommodations for students with disabilities.˙11. Government Relations: Represent the university in interactions with government agencies and legislative bodies, advocating for the institutions interests.˙12. Training and Education: Provide legal training and educational programs to university stakeholders to enhance their understanding of legal issues relevant to their roles.
