Research SpecialistDepartmentPaediatrics and Child HealthEntityAga Khan UniversityLocationPakistanIntroductionThe Outreach and Research Programme of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health has more than fifteen community-based field sites across Pakistan (including four in Karachi) and focuses on research for betterment of women and child health. The Department has a Nutritional Research Laboratory as well as an Infectious Disease Research Laboratory that cater to the needs of its research projects. It has well-acclaimed work to its credit both at the national and international level.UWARN researchers will be looking to advance innovative approaches to laboratory diagnosis, including identifying reagents for antibody tests that detect antibodies in the blood in order to diagnose an active or previous infection.ResponsibilitiesYou will be responsible to supervise project activities related to field and data management to ensure quality control, while maintaining good working relationship with staff, community and various stakeholders involved. Specific responsibilities include to:

  • You will be responsible for:
  • developing and running sequence analysis pipelines for NGS data as per the need for research projects; human and pathogen sequence data,
  • curating a list of software, reference datasets, and bioinformatics pipeline that can be beneficial for the end-user
  • producing written documentation of algorithms, validations, QC/SOPs and other processes related to pipeline updates and procedures as required
  • writting manuscripts and involve in the development of research output,
  • Train and knowledge exchange
  • assisting faculty members to conduct, manage and plan research projects by determining theoretical aspects of the problem and suggest appropriate analytical methods
  • presenting results of bioinformatics software testing internally and externally
  • performing literature searches, testing and validation of new data analysis software related to bioinformatics pipelines.
RequirementsYou should have:
  • atleast a Bachelors or MS in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or related field
  • expertise in bioinformatics, emphasizing genome sequence analysis and gene annotation
  • experience of programming languages, such as, R, and python
  • experience in a variety of bioinformatics databases, tools and software
  • the ability to work comfortably in a range of computer environments including Unix/Linux, workflows (nextflow/docker/wdl)
  • knowledge and experience using scientific tools, technologies and online resources
  • excellent communication and organization skills, and ability to efficiently manage time and workflow, including skillfully prioritizing both long-term projects and day-to-day responsibilities
  • the ability for critical thinking and independent learning.
This is a close-ended position to be based in Karachi.
