Job Description

The University of Virginia Center Health System Development Office seeks an experienced and accomplished Director of Development for Research Departments and Centers. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Health System Development, the Director of Development will play the central role in pursuing ambitious fundraising goals at the mid-point of the Universitys multi-billion dollar Honor the Future campaign. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to make a valuable contribution in support of the essential mission of the fundamental sciences, research, and patient care at UVA. UVA s cutting-edge medical research program is built on innovation and collaboration, bringing together basic and clinical scientists and spanning disciplines to pioneer the treatments and cures of tomorrow. Advances such as the molecular genetics revolution, human genome sequencing, advanced imaging techniques, and high-performance computing make it an exciting time to be engaged in the advanced medical research currently underway at the UVA School of Medicine. The Director of Development, Research Departments and Centers will: Serve as the lead fundraiser for UVA Health Research Departments and Centers, managing a portfolio of donors and prospects. Develop, maintain, and effectively communicate an informed laypersons understanding of the science behind the work of assigned departments and centers. Utilize knowledge of UVA Health Research Departments and Centers to connect their work to the interests of prospects/donors. Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of principal and major gift prospects and donors, corporations and foundations, to the basic sciences, research, patient care, and centers believed to be capable of making principal and major gifts. Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising campaigns for assigned programs within the School of Medicine (SOM) Research Departments and Centers working closely with the Corporate and Foundation Relations team. Establish a consistent presence within assigned departments, centers and programs, to build faculty and staff partnerships and promote a culture of philanthropy. Evaluate HIPAA-compliant patient data for physicians in assigned programs and identify potential major gift grateful patient prospects for further research and cultivation. Ensure that program data is processed within the data portal. Create and implement a transparent donor strategy to move prospective donors along the development continuum. Conduct discovery calls on potential new prospects to engage and increase their interest in and involvement with programs, related programs, research and care of patients. Collaborate and direct strategy with Health System Development Office (HSDO) colleagues to assure alignment and synergy in fundraising efforts. Develop and provide specialized training for staffed faculty and staff about philanthropic principles and tactics. Coach faculty and staff so that they are well prepared to partner in development activities and advance prospect/donor relationships. Direct, manage and assume primary responsibility of all Research Department and Center development initiatives, activities and campaign success. Provide regular and timely documentation of prospect/donor contacts, proposals and gifts in database. Participate and contribute to the ongoing maintenance of the HSDO enterprise by attending internal meetings, analyzing and preparing lists, attending appropriate professional seminars, serving on various committees and working on internal team projects. Maintain a strategic and collaborative relationship with University Advancement Corporate and Foundation Relations to connect corporate and foundation funding to UVA Health priorities. Work with colleagues in University Advancement and across Grounds including Corporate and Foundation Relations, Planned Giving, Principal Relationship Development, University Priorities and Engagement to maximize resources to benefit all medical research. In collaboration with HSDO Communications team, translate research and center campaign priorities and needs into compelling written and electronic content, including proposals, case materials, and presentations. Provide development status reports each month. Working with the HSDO Colleagues, and in collaboration with the Executive Director Healthcare Philanthropy, present updates at relevant faculty/investigator and administrative meetings and utilize these presentations to educate and motivate faculty to deepen fundraising partnerships. Present development status reports each month in collaboration with the Associate Director at relevant faculty and administrative meetings, also utilizing these presentations to educate and motivate faculty for support of grateful patient fundraising. Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Five to eight years of experience in Development (preferably major gifts) and/or medical research, and/or related field and/or experience, and/or expertise with non-profit work or grant making
  • Ability to understand complex research subjects and translate them to a lay individual.
  • Experience in a medical research setting
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, sales or managing relationships with high-net worth individuals
  • Superb oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to frequently travel with occasional evening and weekend work
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Must have a command of cultural and political sensitivity and value and embrace cultural and social differences. Preferred Qualifications:
    • Masters or advanced Degree
    • Background in healthcare philanthropy or serving in healthcare organizations
    • Prior experience in non-profit or higher education fundraising and staffing senior leaders and volunteers
    • Track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative, flexibility and will have the skills to shape and be shaped by an evolving fundraising initiative
    • A high degree of personal integrity and ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details
    • Experience using data to evaluate and make strategic plan
    • Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in the medical field.
