About the JobWe are actively recruiting for an Ophthalmologist. The appointee will provide patient care in the area of general ophthahigh-volume high volume outpatient setting at the Hospital, as well as surgical care within comprehensive ophthalmology. Other duties will include resident education and scholarly activity. The Ophthalmologist is responsible for offering high-quality eye and vision care to patients through a thorough examination and comprehensive treatments in a high-volume outpatient setting. Performs eye exams, diagnoses and treats ophthalmic disease/pathology, prescribes,s medications, and performs lens-based eye surgery. In this role, a primary focus will be resident training and education.Responsibilities:Ophthalmology is a blend of both medicine and surgery. As an ophthalmologist, youll need to:assess and examine patients in order to make a diagnosismanage ophthalmic conditions, taking into account both the medical and psychological aspects of patient caremanage busy general outpatient clinics, emergency eye clinics and specialist clinicsdo occasional ward rounds (most ophthalmic patients have day surgery and dont stay in hospital overnight)work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes optometrists, orthoptists and nurses, as well as with specialists such as neurologists, ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeons, paediatricians and geneticistsoperate equipment such as ophthalmoscopes, slit lamps and lensescarry out eye surgery using, for example, an operating microscope or laser surgeryprovide advice and reassurance to patients and family memberseducate patients to help them understand their medical conditionhandle legal documentation for the certification of patients as blind or partially sightedsupport health promotion and disease prevention activities.What to expect:Youll spend a lot of your time working in outpatient clinics. Many patients will require follow-up appointments for an ongoing condition. Youll usually have two or three operating sessions each week (at consultant level) to cover procedures such as cataract surgery. You can also work in community or primary care settings.Youll work closely with other members of the eye care team such as hospital doctors, ophthalmic nurses, orthoptists, optometrists and ocular prosthetists.Recent new developments in technology and treatments mean that its an exciting time to be an ophthalmologist and it can be a very rewarding career as patient satisfaction is often high. It can, however, be challenging when helping people who are losing or have lost their sight.You may need to travel to attend international meetings, see international patients or operate in other countries.
