Job Description

The School Librarian plans, develops and administers the school library program and its associated policies and services. He/she provides library assistance to students and staff and acts as their consultant on the optimal way of utilizing the libraries services, materials and resources.1. Develops, in collaboration with the Principal a plan for the library services and operations including a curriculum-targeted instructional program2. Assumes leadership in promoting library and media resources use by students and staff3. Administers the annual budget of the library, manages the requisitions forlibrary resources and equipment, and maintains an accurate record of expenses4. Provides statistical information on library resources and utilization as requested by the Principal5. Establishes an attractive and interesting library atmosphere and maintainsquietness on the premises6. Organizes library space, furniture, equipment and resources in an effectiveand inviting setting that is conducive to learning7. Manages the use of technology in the library according to firm utilization rules and in support of the instructional program8. Ensures the cleanliness and hygiene of the area and furniture for student usemaintaining a ?no food or drink? premises9. Maintains professionalism both in appearance and behavior10. Coordinates the arrangement for book fairs organized by the schoolCurriculum and Instructional Support1. Coordinates the receipt, registration and utilization of curriculum supportmaterial (Teacher?s editions of books, CDs, etc.) to be used by academic staff2. Organizes a schedule for class visits and assists teachers in implementing instructional activities and managing students conduct3. Receives periodicals and magazines from academic staff and coordinates theprocess of putting them in circulation4. Manages the student book exchange program5. Monitors students during their presence in the library and ensures that library instructions are being applied6. Facilitates student learning activities and helps them in their research work(use of encyclopedias, dictionaries, references etc.) using strategies that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of individual students as well as groups of students7. Guides students in selection of resources and counsels teachers about new and existing resourcesSelection and Resources Acquisition1. Prepares annual budget requirements for library resourcing2. Coordinates the process of selection and decommissioning of resource materials according to AMSI and school guidelines3. Visits book fairs and publishing companies, meets with salespeople andpublisher representatives who visit the school, and recommend and report to the Principal on resource acquisition4. Coordinates the circulation of acquired resources for effective use in the instructional program5. Reviews professional journals, publishers catalogs, etc. and consults withteachers and other staff about requisition needs6. Receives gift books and other resources from publishers, staff, and students,evaluates their appropriateness and arranges to put them into circulationOrganization and Maintenance of Resources1. Ensures that the library collection is well maintained and in good repair2. Conducts regular inventory checks and repairs damaged books and othermaterial as feasible3. Registers, classifies, catalogs and organizes the resource materials in the most efficient and effective manner and according to professional guidelines4. Prepares and maintains accurate bibliographies and lists of resources5. Stacks and shelves books and other resources appropriately6. Prepares lists of damaged, lost and renovated books and ensures that allrelated school policies are implemented properlyProfessional Development1. Provides library tours and training for newly inducted staff2. Stays up-to-date with new developments in his/her profession throughreadings, conferences, and other means of training and knowledge acquisition and transfers this knowledge to members of the staff on a regular basis

  • Professional qualification in librarianship, information science, or information management from an accredited institution
  • 3 years of experience in a similar position
  • Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students of all ages
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive work relationships with members of the staff
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Advanced computer skills supporting this type of work, including and not limited to word processing tools, spreadsheets, and presentation tools
  • Highly developed organizational and planning skills, including managing time, competing priorities and resources in a structured way
  • Demonstrated ability to set and manage clear and demanding performance expectations for individuals and teams
