Job Description

Staff Medical Officer DepartmentAnesthesiologyEntityAKUH Off-CampusLocationKarachi, PakistanIntroductionThe Aga Khan University Hospital is a not-for-profit healthcare institute that offers all medical services to its patients under one roof. In addition to the tertiary care hospital in Karachi, AKUH has a network of 4 secondary care hospitals. The Department of Anesthesiology provides anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgery in more than twenty operating rooms, runs a surgical intensive care unit, and offers acute and chronic pain management to in-patients and outpatients. In addition, it also provides anesthesia services in the endoscopy suite, Cath-lab, radiology and radiotherapy suite, electroconvulsive therapy and labor and delivery suite. It has around thirty faculty members, fifty residents, and more than fifty anesthesia technicians, making it one of the largest anesthesia departments in Pakistan. Recognizing its high quality and patient safety, the AKUH is the Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited Academic Medical Centre.ResponsibilitiesYou will be responsible to:

  • perform preoperative anaesthesia assessment of patients
  • provide perioperative anaesthesia care to patients undergoing surgery 
  • provide anaesthesia care to patients undergoing procedures outside the operating room and in the Radiotherapy and endoscopy suites
  • perform related procedures under the supervision of a consultant
  • follow hospitals quality and patient safety policies in the provision of patient care
  • carry out orientation of staff and conduct teaching sessions as a measure for capacity building of existing team
  • take part in department quality improvement initiatives
  • The Job usually requires working from 8 am to 5 pm from Monday to Friday, but in case of need, work in evenings, nights and weekends may also be required
RequirementsYou should have:
  • MBBS degree from HEC recognized university, however, additional diploma or MCPS in relevant field will be preferred
  • at least ten years post MBBS experience in related areas or at least eight years in case of additional diploma or MCPS
  • ability to understand issues from patients perspective
  • ability to maintain continuous open and consistent communication with faculty, staff, patients and their families.
  • Strong decision making sense by weighing several factors and to develop solutions that address the root cause of the problem and prevent recurrence.
  • ability to act quickly to address a crisis situation drawing on appropriate resources
  • command over counselling patients and their families and to adapt content, style, tone and medium of communication to suit the target audiences language, cultural background and level of understanding.
