Job Description

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is looking for an experienced Groundwater Modeling specialist to carry out groundwater modeling studies in the Indus basin for different ongoing research projects at IWMI Pakistan. You will be responsible for developing, designing and implementing groundwater management strategies to achieve sustainable water management through improved practices. The groundwater modeler will develop, calibrate and validate the model including the sensitivity analysis and documentation of the groundwater model application at different spatial scales. The work will also include data review, planning regional investigations and interpretation of aquifer parameters from aquifer tests, use of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to develop and review model inputs and outputs for the study area. You will also organize project-related events, workshops, training, and field work involving various stakeholders and contribute to writing donor reports and research publications. You will contribute to the research activities, including literature reviews, field data collection, analytical work, policy analysis, and coordination with stakeholders and project partners in the water and climate sectors. You will also organize project-related events, workshops, training, and field work involving various stakeholders and contribute to writing donor reports and research publications.GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and execute three-dimensional groundwater models to understand and quantify spatial and temporal groundwater management including recharge and discharge mechanism from field to basin scales.
  • Lead the technical tasks on groundwater modeling projects that may include but are not limited to quantify the volumes of groundwater used and sustainably available under current and future climate and socio-economic conditions and the assess the impact of current and future water use on the hydrological system.
  • Conduct relevant research and provide expertise to the national programs in the assessment of climate, surface water and groundwater resources and their efficient use.
  • Collecting and compiling earth land surface datasets including rainfall, digital elevation model (DEM), watershed characteristics, soil characteristics, and land use land cover data from various satellite remote sensing archives.
  • Parameterizing the groundwater model (e.g., MODFLOW) using the collected data from different data repositories.
  • Pre/post-process the primary data in the different image processing software and analyze the datasets for watershed characteristics to identify the potential recharge zones.
  • Calibrate and validate the groundwater model for different land use and climate change scenarios.
  • Analyze the collected datasets for computing the changes in water storage on different spatio-temporal bases.
  • Compile and review available information on artificial groundwater recharge, including groundwater levels, lithology, environmental impacts, and aquifer characteristics.
  • Assist in developing policies to help improve groundwater recharge and management in areas where groundwater is the prime source of irrigation water.
  • Identifying the potential groundwater recharge site as per developed criteria and model outputs.
  • Organize different stakeholder meetings and disseminate the results at different levels.
  • Writing a progress report of the modeling work and a final report on potential zones for artificial groundwater recharge.
  • Experience designing and implementing approaches for data scarce environments.
  • Perform related duties, special projects, and other miscellaneous work as assigned
