- Business Consultant - Service ContractCompany: Industry: Non-Profit and Social Services Job Location: Al Zaatari, Jordan Career Level: Intermediate (Experienced non manager) Date Posted: 24-05-2022 Ref. Number: 151426 Citizenships Jordan Residence Country Jordan Years of Experience 5 - 16Business Consultant - Service Contract and Requirements Blumont is looking to hire a business consultant, to work with the soap-making community at the Made in Zaatari centre (MIZ), to carry out a local market research exercise and new product feasibility study. The objective of the study is to identify new product and business opportunities in the area of personal hygiene or home-hygiene. There is a desire among the soap-makers to expand into the manufacture of additional products as a way to extend their client base and increase the sustainability of their business. * This study is being commissioned in the context of the Purpose-driven Soap and fragrance workshops which Givaudan, the leading global manufacturer of fragrances and flavours, have been running in Zaatari since 2017, in partnership with UNHCR and Professor Helen Storey. Givaudan has engaged Blumont to manage the project pipeline throughout 2021, and to administer funds on behalf of Givaudan, in order to ensure continuity of the activities. The overall aim of the Givaudan project in Zaatari is to facilitate the creation of sustainable livelihoods for the participants, while also increasing female empowerment. The Givaudan team are engaged in the project on a voluntary basis. The study will aim to: * Identify and name a product, or products for which there is local (Jordanian) consumer demand and/or a real possibility of creating demand.* Propose a product ,or products which would have appeal for a wider international consumer sold via external partners (eg Made51 web-site, SITTI soaps)* Explore market opportunities for the soaps already being created (eg gift soaps for weddings, christenings, corporate gifts, hotel chains etc)* Include a benchmarking angle, in order to define the standards of quality required in terms of product, packaging and branding, and the optimum pricing and cost-structure for success in the competitive space.* Consider possibilities for co-creation of packaged items with other Zaatari craft groups (eg cotton embroidered pouches for soaps, hand-made boxes or soap trays, recycled packaging)* If new product formats are identified as being feasible and profitable for the ladies to produce at a competitive price, technical training can be offered via one of Givaudans local client partners, KIMA and/or Al-al Bayt University (AABU) experts with potential involvement of Givaudan experts via digital sessions. AABU has also offered laboratory space for small scale trial production. If additional laboratory space and equipment is required in Zaatari, the cost and logistics will need to be taken into consideration, relative to the funds available from Givaudan or other sources. Examples of the product formats to be considered (non-exhaustive): - Liquid soap/shower-gel/shampoo- Hand Dishwash liquid- Hand Sanitizer- Traditional Aleppo soap, olive oil or other premium soap.- Hand and body cream- Scented candles Importantly, the ladies should be directly involved in the scoping of the study, its preparation and analysis of results, as well as in the consideration of how to move forward based on the study outcomes. The Givaudan team and external partners will also be available to assist with scoping and preparation of the study and can provide guidance relative to technical aspects and product feasibility. For example, as far as possible, and with consideration for UNHCR restrictions on chemical usage in refugee camps, the selected products should be feasible to produce using materials of natural origin. Givaudan team and external partners will advise once a short list of potential products is identified. The consultant will be required to consider the current legal framework in Jordan, including an understanding of which professional sectors are open to refugees, either as a Home-based business ,or as an employee. The Made in Zaatari soap makers currently produce fragranced glycerine soaps, which are produced using what is known as the melt and pour technique. Since 2017 over 100 ladies have attended a number of soap and fragrance workshops run by Givaudan volunteers with support from UNHCR, Blumont and Prof Helen Storey. Around 30 women have begun to work together in the spirit of a co-operative. Some soaps are also produced in their homes, particularly since Covid restrictions were enforced. The soaps are sold primarily within the camp. Prior to Covid they had begun to sell occasionally in bazaars in Jordan, and to explore selling via on-line platforms (eg: Souqfann.com) these initiatives completely stopped when Covid hit. The soaps are produced in a small lab within the M.I.Z. center, or in their homes. * Approximately 20 of the MIZ ladies took part in a Blumont led HBB training program in July 2021. This S.O.W aims to provide complementary insights to ensure the creation of a robust and deliverable business plan.Qualifications for Consultant:* A degree in business studies, brand marketing, consumer market research or equivalent* Minimum of 5 years experience in consumer market research, small business creation or in business consultancy* Knowledge of Jordanian legal framework regarding refugees* Project management, Leadership, organizational, and problem solving skills* Diplomacy, Compassion and the ability to create a positive team dynamic* Previous experience working with female refugees would be an advantage* Fluency in Arabic and English* Required training:* 20 days total to include some full day and some half-day sessions with the MIZ ladies, and with assignments given to the ladies in small groups between sessions.* The assignments could include :* Competitive market analysis in-store and on-line, with data-gathering* Consumer interviews in-store or via digital connection* Analysis of results* The consultant will also be asked to produce a short report at the end of the training, with observations and recommendations.
