Job Description

In accordance with policies and standards established by the University of Calgary, Student Counsellor performs a variety of tasks related to the Student Services responsibilities at the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ).The nature of the work is driven by deadlines, interruptions and shifting priorities; it is imperative that the Student Counsellor can work well in a team-based environment and with minimal direct supervision. S/he must stay current and up-to-date with regulations of the University of Calgary related to the academic requirements and regulations for the U of C nursing programs.Primary Purpose of the Position: (Key purpose, functions, roles):?The primary focus of this position will be to provide personal, academic and career counseling to individual students or groups of students and to develop & deliver student wellness, leadership & student success programs.Qualifications/Expertise Required:

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a Master?s degree in Psychology
  • Education with focus on counseling, Social Work or a related degree with minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in university or corporate environment.
  • Previous experience in a post-secondary student counseling role is strongly recommended
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of the needs of diverse (cultural, ethnic and age) population in the transnational post-secondary setting
  • A student-centered approach, a strong degree of compassion and empathy
  • Well-developed presentation skills
  • Exemplary communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal/ intrapersonal skills
  • A demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships in a team environment
  • A strong commitment to promoting student success
  • Previous work experience in a multicultural environment would be an asset
  • Ability to work productively in a framework of operations that fully respects the laws, culture and religion of Qatar
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment
  • Ability to work in a confidential setting and demonstrate good judgment in dealing with culturally sensitive situations
  • Flexibility, adaptability and the maturity to work in an ever changing environment
  • A high degree of professionalism
  • Ability to speak Arabic would be an asset
