Job Description

JOB PURPOSEThe jobholder is responsible to provide specialized engineering for Borougeu2019s process technology to ensure safe and reliable operation of existing plants, along with potential optimization, process related investigation and to support the technical projects and plant expansion to ensure correct and consistent design philosophies and practices are applied in different stages of the projects. The Sr. Process engineer is responsible for the technical assurance & compliance of the CONTRACTOR to the COMPANYu2019s specific discipline scope, process specifications, respective governing codes & standards & industry best practices. Roles & responsibilities includes reviews & approvals of discipline related documentation (secure technical authority approval for Class 1 documents), participation in discipline progress meetings with Contractor counter-part, Planned design review sessions, review & resolution of discipline specific Technical queries, verification of discipline specific concession requests (as applicable) & provide input (approval or rejection) with justification. Support Procurements activities & relevant documents review & approvals, VENDOR documents review, physical inspection as required. Support Construction & commissioning activities by involvement in respective Discipline inspections & punch listing activities as applicable for release of respective certifications (DAC/MC,,etc.) Verification of Final discipline specific Documentation & Database at handover & confirm completeness & correctnessThe Senior Process Engineer plays a critical role in the design, optimization, and continuous improvement of petrochemical processes within the company. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, leading technical projects, and providing expertise to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operations. The Senior Process Engineer is expected to have a deep understanding of petrochemical processes, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to mentor and guide junior engineers.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIESJob Specific AccountabilitiesTechnical Authority

  • Provide expert services related to the design and development of process facilities in Borouge ensuring that design is HSE compliant, optimum, and meets operational requirements, as Companyu2019s technical authority and advisor in the area of Process Technology, Design and Engineering and
  • Approve all Technical Queries and Concession Requests, approval of various Reviews Closed out Reports such as HAZOP, Value Engineering, and Technical Bid Evaluations
  • Identify and communicate with licensor, product owners and product development engineers from Innovation Center regarding development of new products and step changes in current products.
  • Initiate, direct and coordinate the standardization of process design work, including design basis, specifications and philosophies. Ensures correct and consistent design practices (such as codes and standards, specifications and philosophies) are applied across various projects in different fields.
  • Participate and contribute as Process Technical Authority in the key HSE reviews like HAZOP, HAZID, PSSR, etc. for the new Projects and expansion / growth projects.
  • Act as the technical Advisor in the field of Process Engineering and provides necessary guidance/advice to the various Asset Teams within Projects & Technical support and other Units/Functions.
  • Act as the technical advisor to Engineering Management on the development of corporate guidelines that involves the Process Engineering input.
Pre-study
  • Act as process advisor/consultant in leading the pre-studies and feasibility studies required to develop new projects or to incorporate new technologies as part of the Identify and Assess and Select stages
  • Review and validate the pre-studies and feasibility studies required to develop new projects or to incorporate new technologies.
  • Liaise with SS&BD for development of Technical studies & Business case validation
  • Responsible for providing the technical inputs to business case development, review and validation in the Define and Execute stages.
  • Approve various Reviews Closed out Reports such as Technical studies, Value Engineering, ADNOC major projects IPR (Independent Project Review), COP (Cost Optimization Project) and VAP (Value assurance Processes).
  • Provide inputs and guidance for the OL/PO Investment road map and business plan.
  • Provide technical advises to the Business development team during optimization studies, debottlenecking studies, conceptual studies and feasibility studies, leading to increased safety and profitability of the assets.
Process Excellence
  • Review and update of Process BGS, and review and approval of deviations to Process BGS, as an owner of Borouge General Specifications for Process Discipline.
  • Identify and communicate with licensors of new technologies to identify new opportunities for developing the assets of Borouge.
  • Seize opportunities to develop / identify new projects to match site feedstock and monomer availability, intermediate products demand and by-products utilization
  • Identify and communicate with licensor, product owners and product development engineers from Innovation Centre regarding development of new products and step changes in current products.
  • Participate in licensors meetings and network meetings with other OPCOs and plant representatives, as well as in the profit optimization meeting for raw materials and investment related inputs.
  • Coordinate with operations and site supply chain for product cycle optimization and better utilization of existing and future assets in Ruwais.
  • Identify and communicate with licensors of new technologies to identify new opportunities for developing the assets of Borouge.
  • Participate in process evaluation, development and technical risk analysis to ensure most economical and efficient design of processes and equipment.
Risk & Event Management
  • As a technical authority expert, he works with Operation, to identify best operational strategy and deliver innovative technical solutions by using internationally acclaimed OPEX tools including Risk & event management tools and use of RCA for proper identification of root cause of plant problems.
  • Participate in process evaluation, development and technical risk analysis to ensure most economical and efficient design of processes and equipment
  • Manage the asset risk register at functional level through EDARA by identification, investigation and providing suitable solution to reduce / mitigate the operation risk to ALARP level for the identified risk levels based on the existing procedures.
  • Lead and participate in major process / quality related investigation and troubleshooting
  • Lead the investigation/ troubleshooting of high severity actual or potential operational/ process safety events.
Projects Support
  • Ensure correct and consistent design practices and design philosophies are applied in the different stages of the assigned projects.
  • Ensure safe, economical and technically sound decisions are taken to meet the projects requirements and to meet Borougeu2019s business objectives.
  • Act as consultant in the screening and conceptual designs for different fieldsu2019 developments and growth/major projects (e.g. multi-billion project of Borouge 4).
  • Lead licensor evaluation and selection during the Pre-FEED/FEED stages
  • Support Process Design and Process Engineering, responsible for ensuring that design is HSE compliant, optimum, and meets operational requirements
  • Review technical documents during tendering of all project phases alongside with identifying the scope of work in the invitation to tender
  • Lead and participate in various Design Reviews, HAZOP/HAZID, PFD and P&ID Review, Value Engineering, SIL Analysis and 3D Model Review in the different phases of the project (Pre-FEED/FEED/EPC) to ensure the technical soundness of Process Design in the growth/major projects.
  • Initiate process chemical test runs and other process test runs related to the assigned projects, review test run risk rating and requirements for other business units and its impact on existing assets, and acts as test run responsible for the assigned test runs in accordance to the established test run procedure.
Operations Support
  • Provide the key technical support related to process technology for the safe and reliable operation of existing plants
  • Take responsibility as raw material owner for Catalyst and Process chemicals defining the appropriate raw material specification including the procurement support for auditing and approving new suppliers through the established raw material qualification process
  • Carry out optimization studies leading to increased safety and profitability of the assets
  • Lead and participate in new technologies evaluation to enhance the operability and reliability of the assets
  • Lead and participate in the new products / catalysts test runs
  • Lead and participate in new technologies evaluation, major process/ quality related investigation, and new products/catalysts test runs.
Technical Assurance

  • To supervise and ensure the design works of Vendor and Contractor are in accordance with the scope of work and project technical specifications.
  • Ensure process engineering schedules are consistent with Company overall Project requirements.
  • Review & approval : review & approval of discipline specific engineering documents, assign respective review codes, follow up on other disciplines involved in the document review to ensure timely release of the review cycle, consolidate all review discipline comments, verify its validity & as required address them with issues/concerns over the comments to reach a resolution before sending the consolidated review comments to CONTRACTOR, Verify CONTRACTORu2019s resolution of all comments

  • Support the process manager with the confidentiality within area assigned with a full understanding of the license agreement requirements

  • Monitor EPC engineering performance against the agreement, including baselines and milestones, identify negative trends and items of concern and propose corrective actions and concerns to Process Manager
  • Establish and monitor a systematic approach to risk management and project changes and Keep Process Manager informed accordingly.
Process/Engineering Change Management
  • Review of discipline specific Concession requests issued within the CONTRACT, validate the basis of the request & its impact on technical integrity & justification, prior to requesting endorsement from Technical authority.
  • Monitoring & ensuring that discipline specific design change management is being carried out for all respective engineering changes with proper multidiscipline impact assessment & the same is registered & controlled (as & when required).
  • Maintain regular meetings with discipline counter part for timely discipline activity coordination & problems resolution as applicable.
  • Communicate discipline specific updates/areas of concern on regular basis to the package engineering manager & to other disciplines within the package.
  • Maintaining time records & timely submission of time sheets for approval
  • Timely input into engineering leave planner & subsequent submittal of leave (after aligning a handover & a deputy during the leave period).
  • Address technical conflicts & disputes with Counterpart (CONTRACTOR) in a professional & systematic manner, relevant to governing specifications/codes & actual situation.
Process Design and Optimization:
  • Lead the design and optimization of hexene production processes, ensuring efficient conversion and yield.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate catalysts, reactor configurations, and separation techniques for hexene production.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance process efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and improve product quality.
Scale-up and Commercialization:
  • Develop and execute plans for scaling up hexene processes from laboratory to commercial production, ensuring seamless transition and maintaining process performance.
  • Collaborate with R&D teams to transfer new technologies and improvements into full-scale production.
Product Quality and Purity:
  • Ensure the production of high-quality hexene products by monitoring and controlling key parameters throughout the process.

  • Lead investigations into process deviations, upsets, and incidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.

  • Lead the design and optimization of petrochemical processes, ensuring efficient and cost-effective production.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLSMinimum Qualification

  • Bacheloru2019s degree in Chemical Engineering required
  • Must be fluent in English language (Written & Spoken).
  • Bacheloru2019s degree in chemical engineering or related field. Advanced degree is a plus.
  • Process Design and Simulation: In-depth knowledge of process design principles, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and process simulation using tools like Aspen Plus or HYSYS.
  • Petrochemical Processes: Strong understanding of petrochemical processes, including reaction kinetics, separation techniques, distillation, catalysis, and polymerization.
  • Process Safety: Familiarity with process safety concepts, risk assessment methodologies, and safety instrumented systems (SIS). Knowledge of relevant safety standards (e.g., API 520, API 521) is important.

  • Minimum of 12 - 15 years of experience in process engineering, preferably in Petrochemical, Oil & Gas Industry, or Refinery sector in production operations, maintenance, project engineering / construction, shutdown management and materials management.
  • Experience in carrying out feasibility studies for de-bottlenecking, energy conservation, effluent reduction, revamps etc.
  • Proficiency in developing and reviewing process documents like, PFDs, P&IDs, Data sheets, logic diagrams, etc.
  • Off-sites and utilities requirements and design in Petrochemical Industry
  • Demonstration and application of best engineering practices for engineering review, analysis, design and project management
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot complex operational problems
