Job Description

1. Job PurposeThe Senior Aquarist is responsible for the production and maintenance of high quality living exhibits and provides assistance with a range of activities associated with The National Aquarium exhibit. The primary role of the Senior Aquarist is to supervise and participate in the day-to-day maintenance of living exhibits and support aquariums and systems, routine SCUBA diving duties. The Senior Aquarist plays as an important role in guiding and training the aquarist team in the development and implementation of new exhibits and techniques.2. Nature & ScopeThe job holder will be responsible for the daily care of all the animals within the Aquarium3. Dimensions:Ensure that the highest standards of animals care are maintained across all exhibits.4. Principal Accountabilities:? Performs daily monitoring and assessment of aquatic animals, their health, treatment and management to ensure the highest level of quality throughout the aquarium facility.? Acts as a lead and resource to aquarists and junior aquarists.? Works with the Aquarist supervisor to achieve company and personal goals for the aquarist team.? Diving as required on a day to day basis and perform maintenance and feedings as required.? Ensure staffs are trained in accordance with the Working Instructions and Husbandry Manuals.? Handle live animal shipments and acclimation processes? Ensure quarantine procedures are kept to a high standard? Ensure that Health and Safety protocols are followed at all times.? Assume Supervisorial responsibilities for the Husbandry Department by increasing support while Supervisor is absent or dealing with consultancy and development projects.? Assist the Curatorial team in the development of new exhibits? Take responsibility for activities relating to exhibits and husbandry.? Daily monitor water quality and act appropriately to the needs of the collection.? Daily monitor animal feedings and adjust accordingly.? Report to the Veterinarian any abnormalities regarding animal health? Work, with the Life Support Manager, to ensure that life support systems are adequate for maintaining the collection, and that water quality is maintained.? Ensure routine specimen monitoring, training and enrichment programs are developed and implemented.? Monitor and report consumables inventory to the Aquarist Supervisor.? Will ensure that all areas of responsibility are reviewed and subjected to a process of continuous improvement.? Assist with collection of daily data for husbandry protocols? Communicate to the public at all levels? Support and collaborate with Front of House personnel.? Ensures that animal encounters and feeding shows are performed as per schedule and at the highest standard.? Carry any other task assigned by the Aquarist Supervisor or Curator.
