Job Description

Chief Resident EngineerApply nowSindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP) aims to improve the reliability and safety of the barrages in Sindh, Pakistan and strengthen the Sindh Irrigation Department?s capacity to operate and manage the barrages.The project reflects the importance of the Indus River to Sindh?s economy. More than 90 percent of Sindh?s agricultural production depends on irrigation from the Indus River, which is the only reliable and substantial source of water for the province. Without irrigation, agricultural production in most areas in the province will not be possible, because of the arid to semi-arid climate and low and variable rainfall. To manage water flow into the main canals, three barrages (in order from upstream to downstream), Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri, were constructed in 1963, 1932 and 1958, respectively. This project finances the rehabilitation of Guddu Barrage and Sukkur Barrage to prolong their design life. The project also supports the modernization of and improvements to the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the barrages.The scope of work under SBIP comprises the following elements:

  • Gate replacement of barrage and head regulators;
  • Replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment;
  • Provision of equipment for the future operation and maintenance of the barrage;
  • Minor repairs to the barrage and head work civil structures;
Construction works are expected to start in early 2022 and to continue until December 2025.Mott MacDonald is looking to recruit an experienced Chief Resident Engineer, with either a civil engineering or mechanical engineering background, to lead the construction supervision team for SBIP. The role would be full-time for a period of around 36 months, extendable by mutual agreement, and based within the project area in Sindh, Pakistan.The CRE will lead a large supervision team comprising both international and national staff. The CRE will in turn report to the Team Leader / Project Principal. The Chief Resident Engineer will work alongside these experienced professionals to provide construction supervision services.Responsibilities:
  • Assume overall responsibility for management of the construction supervision team
  • Administer the civil works contract(s)
  • Provide technical support and guidance to the client
  • Report on the progress of all project activities to the client on a regular basis
An expatriate package including airfares, accommodation and transport will be provided.Candidate Specification
  • Bachelor?s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering
  • Significant experience should be for dams, barrages or irrigation projects
  • Construction supervision experience
  • Good working knowledge of FIDIC conditions of contract
The following would be also be advantageous but are not essential:
  • Master?s degree in Hydraulic Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Water Resources or related field
  • Qualification in project management and / or contract management
  • Experience of working in Pakistan and / or the region
